How Can You Prevent Reptitive Stress Injury

What do you do to prevent yourself from getting repetitive stress injury?

What can you do?

Are there some extra lengths that you can go to, in order to stay out of harms way of repetitive stress injury?

The answer is yes.

There are some things you can do to help you to keep from getting repetitive stress injury. If you use a computer all day everyday, then you need to pay attention to pain and fatigue. You need to stop and take a break and a stretch when you feel the onset of fatigue and/or pain coming on.

First of all, it is very important that you listen to your body and know your limits. With most people, if they are injured, they take measure not to agitate the injury or make it worse. Pain is big motivator to get better. You do this because you are listening to your body. repetitive stress injury is no exception… you will need to listen to your body… or the pain may become unbearable even with repetitive stress injury.

One of the most common and effective preventative measures against the onset of repetitive stress injury is learning and implementing proper posture. Make sure your back is correctly aligned at all times. If you slump then you will have some upper back, neck, or shoulder problems. Be mindful of your back and your posture and work to maintain good posture. At first it may be difficult to sit straight because those muscles have grown weak over time, but stay vigilant in your posture efforts. Your supporting muscles will gain strength and your good posture will become more natural for you.

Get up and stretch your back, legs, arms, really your whole body needs to be worked out. I can’t over emphasize this point enough. If you sit for two hours straight then get up and take fifteen minutes to walk around the room. If there are stairs available take a couple trips up and down the stairs… get the blood re-circulating.  Give your body the much needed break it needs, and then you can go back to work.

If you are typing, don't rest your wrists on anything when you type. Try not to bend them, keep them straight. It will put less tension on your wrist and keep them from getting repetitive stress injury.

Over time you will find many different tricks and techniques that will help you along the way. Not everything you can do is listed here, but it gives you a good start to knowing what you can do to prevent repetitive stress injury.

Remember a regular exercise program will really go a long way in preventing repetitive stress injury. It keeps you in tune with your body and it is just plain good sense. Keep your body active and health and take good care of it and you’ll notice that aches and pains aren’t cropping up all the time. No one wants to be in pain, so take those necessary precautions to keep your self healthy.
